AXS TV kicked it into high gear tonight for the premiere of their Season 3 with an excellent Prince Tribute by Purple Reign at the Whisky A Go Go.

A long time ago, I tagged along with a friend to the Prince concert (if I remember correctly he was the “Artist Formerly Known As Prince” during this time)   I was more of a casual fan when I attended, but I left that show a huge fan.

At the time, that was the best concert I had ever seen.   Over the years, I have bought just about every Prince album and I have seen him in concert many times since.  He is on a completely different level when it comes to performance and musicianship.

I remember being in Las Vegas a long while back and heard a band in a casino lounge playing marvelous versions of Prince songs.      That band was Purple Reign and I knew before the show that they were truly deserving of being billed as the World’s Greatest Tribute Band.  My first thought was “”Are they going to play Darling Nikki?”

I figured it would be a rather tame set list, but fortunately, I was way wrong.    The music and the performances with his onstage dancer were quite sexy, risqué, and at times, quite arousing.   I felt like I was really at a Prince concert and I was thinking dirty thoughts while watching the show.    It brought back memories of seeing the movie “Purple Rain” when I was a little kid.

Purple Reign kicked off the show with “Let’s Go Crazy”.   The place was rocking.   It was one awesome tune after another with “Kiss”, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and he was joined onstage with a hot dancer during Raspberry Beret.

The show was highly entertaining and an extravagant production with all the costume changes, the excellent vocals, musicianship and excellent song selection.  The crowd really came to life for the favorites “1999” and “Little Red Corvette”

Prior to the encore, the inclusion of “Jungle Love” with a Morris Day and Jerome duo was a great call.

DSC01628DSC01629DSC01631DSC01632DSC01640DSC01644DSC01648DSC01651

The encore itself was fantastic.  “When Doves Cry” was incredible, “Purple Rain” rocked as purple glow sticks lit up the venue and the ended out with “I Would Die 4 U” and went off the air with the fantastic “BAby I’m A Star”.   After that, things got wild with the most NSFW tune yet on AXS TV.  It rocked and was definitely too hot for TV.  Video below.    This show was a total win.

Purple Reign  does an amazing job at paying tribute to the incredible musician currently known as Prince.    Jason Tenner does Prince so well and the rest of the band is also top notch.   I will definitely be seeking out their Vegas show the next time I am in Sin City.

WINGS BAND (Paul McCartney. Wings Tribute) THE CANYON CLUB January 4, 2014 1/4/2014

I saw an insane number of tribute band concerts last year.   Out of every tribute band I’ve ever seen, The Fab Four from Season 2 of AXS TV’s The World’s Greatest Tribute Band was by far the best act I’ve ever witnessed.

I was very excited to hear that the Wings Band, which has several members of the Fab Four (the ultra-talented Ardy Sarraf and Ron McNeil), is going to be on Season  of the show and I had to catch them before their big TV date performing at The Canyon Club.

The band, complete with horn section, came out and did a 90 minute set of incredible Paul McCartney and Wings tunes.  Everyone in this band is a phenomenal musician.  The guitar work, the horn section, the songs were all great.

This show was easily on par with the Fab Four, which makes them at least the second best tribute band I’ve ever seen.      It’s quite interesting (and very impressive) that Ardy Sarraf, although born right-handed, learned how to play the bass left handed for his role as Paul McCartney.    What a great performance by the entire band.   I’m floored.

As a special surprise, Laurence Juber, Wings’ lead guitarist from 1978-1981, came out during the encore and rocked some tunes with the band. That was a huge treat for everyone in attendance.

And, The Fab Four are also playing at the Canyon next month, so that’s another show to really look forward to.

From Wikipedia:

Formed by Ardy Sarraf, Wings band is a Paul McCartney and Wings tribute act that covers many of McCartney’s biggest, post-Beatles hits. The band features Ron McNeil, Michael Amador and Rolo Sandoval, plus a horns section led by Wendell Kelly (who has performed with many music acts, including The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie and Whitney Houston, to name a few), and singer/songwriter Christine Rosander as Linda McCartney.

DOUG ALDRICH GODPS GUITAR / MARSHALL AMP CLINIC GODPS MUSIC NEWBURY PARK 12/19/2013

A bunch of Marshall Amps at GODPSMUSIC

Before introducing Doug Aldrich, Nick Bowcott of Grim Reaper Fame (and a bigwig at Marshall) came out and played a few tunes on the guitar and told a very inspirational story about Jim Marshall and how he ultimately became the household name in guitar amplification.

Doug was my guitar teacher in the late 80s.  In fact, there were several of his old students in attendance at this event.    Doug was already considered a huge guitar player in Japan when he had tons of students and played mostly local gigs.   Just getting to see him play each week was a great experience.      During this time, he could be seen in Lion videos on Headbangers Ball, in full page guitar ads in all the major guitar mags and this is also when he initially declined the Dio gig.  Shortly thereafter, he joined Hurricane.      I’ve seen Doug with Lion, Hurricane, Whitesnake and jamming with Brian Tichy, Michael Devin and Keith St. John.  He truly is one of the nicest people you could ever meet and is a complete monster on the guitar.
