Here Come The Mummies House of Blues Sunset 10/4/2012

This was the perfect way to start October and get ready for Halloween. I was told about this Here Come The Mummies from a friend a while back who had seen them in concert.

They came onto the stage through the crowd by the back bar and played some funky R&B tunes. The entire band was great – a strong horn section, a killer bass player, guitarist/singer, keyboardist and some great drummers/ percussionists. Between the costumes, the funny / odd music and the vibe, this show was too cool.

The show was fast-paced and exciting throughout. The music was very danceable. It was funny, spooky, creepy and it jammed.

I’ll definitely try to see them again when they’re back in LA.

That Metal Bar- VIPER ROOM- a must-see event if you are a metal head!

THAT METAL BAR – DJ Dave Wave and Railroad to Alaska The Viper Room 10/4/2012 After HCTM, I took a stroll to The Viper Room just before midnight so I could finally witness That Metal Bar – the brainchild of true heavy metal aficionado "DJ Dave Wave" When I went upstairs, there was a killer band playing called Railroad To Alaska. They rocked. The singer/guitarist had a great stage presence about him and he sounded really good. It was heavy music, for sure. At one point, they did a song with a rather contrasting intro that had some pretty intense vocal harmonies before rocking out. It was quite unexpected, but the song got pretty heavy from there. This was another band I just happened to see at The Viper Room that I’d definitely go back again for (All Hail The Yet was the band I became a fan of the last time I was there.

After their set, DJ Dave Wave prepared for his heavy metal DJ show. Dave is the true embodiment of heavy metal. His love for the music definitely drives the energy in the room. He’s decked out 80s metal-style and has a great DJ/ lighting rig.   The green lasers were really great…. and women dancing to metal?  That’s a huge win right there….   DJ Dave Wave rocked out, played some great metal tunes, did a little singing and growling along with it (he does a good job there as well) and had some dancers onstage and I typically don’t say this about too many shows, but I can say without a doubt that a trip to That Metal Bar on a THURSDAY NIGHT is definitely worth the time, effort and money.   Go see it if metal if your thing.

This was a cool event.  The last time I attended a guitar clinic at Instrumental Music was Michael Angelo (Batio) in the 80s when the store was on the other side of the boulevard and Doug Aldrich was still giving lessons there.

George was funny from the second he came out and addressed the crowd.

He asked if he could smoke while he played.  Then he said "I bet you you’d let Slash smoke in here.”  It was classic.

He shredded along with a few backing tracks before doing a Q&A.  I learned some new stuff while watching him play.

Someone asked how he got the clean tones he did on the new Dokken album. That elicited a good laugh for the other attendees.
George said he hasn’t been in Dokken since 1997 and that’s Don’s lawyer playing on the album.

George talked about the music industry, how the internet…

Once the George Lynch guitar clinic in Ventura County finished up, I headed out to Sherman Oaks to see the Phil Soussan band at Cafe Cordiale.  I sat down for dinner and they started to play.   I was one of the few people there at the start of the show.  This is my third time seeing Phil’s band live.   The songs are really good and the musicianship is extraordinary.  They went through their set and finished with "Shot In The Dark".   Jeff Bowders, Dave Filice, Howie Simon and Phil are definitely a band to be reckoned with.  You won’t see too many band anywhere with this much talent.

The jam after their set was great.  They played "Fire" and some other recognizable rock tunes.

The vocal highlight of the evening was Cara Lee singing "Superstition".  That was phenomenal.   She has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard.
